Piper Paul School Of Piping

Learn to play the Bagpipes at any age.

The Great Highland Bagpipes are the best known of Scotland’s musical instruments and an ambassador for Scotland throughout the world. At Piper Paul School Of Piping we strive for excellence for the instrument and its music.

The Piper Paul School of Piping, Is presently working on the formation of a Museum of Piping in South Africa. We are currently looking for Items for display as well as Funds.

Our Piping lessons follow the following format

1. Individual practice chanter lessons until the learner is ready to play on the actual instrument.
This is prescribed until after 'Scotland the Brave' is mastered on the practice chanter
Each individual piper takes a different amount of time to get there but usually between 1-12months of following the workbook.

2. Pipe Practice along with chanter practice
This will continue until the piper is relatively comfortable with the actual pipes and is ready to join the senior band. Usually another 1-12 months depending on the piper

3. Senior band practice
There is no charge for this for a weekly basis, there is only a yearly membership fee. All pipers get together jam and practice for competitions.
Numbers 1 and 2 may still continue when and if the piper requests help

Cost
1. R120 per lesson (between 45min-1h30) depending on the learners aptitude with the individual lesson
2. Chanter lessons drop to R100 per lesson when the actual instrument is taken up (between 45min-1h00) Instrument lessons R100 per hour

There is a concession offered to group lessons. R100 pp with 2 people, R90 pp with 3 people and so on (number limited to 5 people in any group)

What you will need

1. Practice chanter (wood ones are R350 vinyl once R900; approximate cost dependant on exchange rate) Vinyl chanters are much better to have as you can clean them in a basin with some cold detol water as they get VERY icky inside. Wood ones tend to grow mold on them
Black Hemp (seal pieces R150)
Replacement reeds if the first one that comes with the chanter breaks will be R100

2. Own set of Bagpipes this price ranges from R8000 to infinity in cost (with all the add on's needed to play) Please do not buy a set of pipes without talking to us first as there are websites out there that claim to be selling good quality bagpipes and a good price and all you end up with is something you cannot use or sell.

Note: the prices above are all subject to change due to fluctuations in the exchange rate and inflation (we do try to keep the prices up to date)

It is important to note the following:

Bagpipers take their playing very seriously. It is advised that practice takes place at least twice a week in phase 1 of playing. It is not a prerequisite though. It will merely increase the learners chances of sticking it through until the end as learning is initially very slow.

Lessons are there to learn new content. If the learner comes to a lesson without having practiced sufficiently during the week on their own progression will be much slower.

Payment is required in full for each month in advance. Cancellations less than 24h in advance will still be charged for

Wednesdays: 15:30-19:00
